About 50 food manufacturing jobs axed at McCains
The firm said it had “embarked on a period of growth and needs to do that on the foundation of maximum efficiency and cost competitiveness”.
McCain employs 127 staff at its factory on the Brighton Street Industrial Estate. The plant produces breaded and fried finger foods.
Long-term viability
The firm said it wanted to change production shift patterns to “ensure the long-term viability” of the site.
It said it would try to minimise the impact of the job losses by offering voluntary redundancy, re-training and career assistance.
“We fully appreciate that the uncertainty caused by this proposal will be unsettling for those potentially affected, so our focus is on open communication,” said McCain.
In June the company axed 40 food manufacturing jobs, blaming the cuts on falling pizza sales.
