Food wholesaler Turners Fine Foods has reportedly been taken into administration, threatening more than 320 jobs, and prompting offers of ‘help’ from competitors Booker Wholesale and Brakes.

More than 320 workers could lose their jobs at the business, based in Goudhurst, Kent, if a buyer for the company is not found.

Turners announced on Wednesday (July 20) that the company had filed for administration, as a statement was reportedly sent to its customers.

The business will continue trading until July 29, it was understood. No one from Turners was available to answer FoodManufacture.co,uk’s questions.

The wholesaler appointed new management in April, in a bid to revitalise the business.

Booker Wholesale and Brakes have taken to social media to show messages of “support” for businesses affected by news of Turners Fine Foods’s administration.

‘We are here to support your business’

Booker Wholesale, part of the Booker Group which owns Makro, Londis and Premier stores, wrote on its Facebook page: “Following the unfortunate news that Turners Fine Foods has gone into administration, if you have been affected, we are here to support your business. Contact your local branch to see how we can help”.

Similarly, Brakes wrote on Twitter: “Sad to hear Turners Fine Foods are no longer trading. If you’ve been affected & need help, call us”.

Turners Fine Foods’s chairman Sean Cooper was understood to have written to customers explaining the decision to file for administration.

Cooper wrote: “You may recall I wrote to you on June 27 introducing myself and outlining the recent events at Turners, and explaining what we were trying to do to fix the business,” according to reports in the Kent and Sussex Courier.

‘Unable to complete this task’

“It is with deep regret that I now write to you to inform you that we have been unable to complete this task, and find ourselves in a position where we will be appointing administrators on Friday, July 29.”

Meanwhile, regional food wholesalers joined Booker Wholesale and Brakes in offering to help food firms affected by Turners Fine Foods’s decision to enter administration.

Tastables Brighton wrote on Twitter: “Through the power of Twitter, we have heard Turners Fine Foods have ceased trading, please call us to discuss your requirements.”

Arthur David, fruit, vegetable and dairy supplier for the southwest, wrote: “Sad to hear about Turners Fine Foods. If we can help in anyway, please give us a call.”
