Asda recalls burgers after plastic contamination

Burgers contaminated with plastic, salmon products infected with listeria and mislabelled soup sparked three food recalls last week by Asda, OT (Smoked Salmon) and Waitrose.

The supermarket chain recalled its Asda 4 Vegetarian Vegetable Burgers, on fears that the product  may contain pieces of hard green plastic.

The recall affected vegetable burgers with a ‘best before’ date of April 6 2017, due to a possible risk to health. The products affected had a pack size of 454g and a bar code of 505478108284.

No other Asda products were affected by the recall.

Listeria contamination

Meanwhile, listeria contamination prompted the recall of various smoked salmon products by OT (Smoked Salmon) Ltd.

The fish processor issued the recall after discovering high levels of Listeria monocytogenes in various smoked salmon products. Read details of the recalled products in the box below.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) said in a statement: “Although the use by date on some of the products has expired, this product is suitable for home freezing, and therefore may have been frozen.”

According to the FSA: “Symptoms caused by Listeria monocytogenes vary, ranging from mild flu-like symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea to more serious infections, such as meningitis and other potentially life-threatening complications.”

Vulnerable groups include: the elderly, pregnant women, unborn and newborn infants and people with weakened immune systems.

Waitrose Duchy Organic

Another food product recalled last week was Waitrose Duchy Organic Spiced Carrot and Parsnip Soup, due to a label mistake.

The FSA said: “A small number of packs have been incorrectly filled with Waitrose Duchy Organic Chicken and Spelt Broth, and therefore contains gluten and celery which are not mentioned on the label.

“This makes the product a possible health risk to anyone with an allergy to wheat (gluten) or celery.”

The recall affected products with a pack size of 600g and a ‘use by’ date of July 1 2016.

No other Waitrose products were known to be affected.

The latest recalls followed notices issued for the recall of a listeria infected cheese and coriander potentially infected with salmonella.
