Asda has been forced to withdraw its own-label buttery spread that may contain bits of hard plastic, while Ikea and the Co-operative announced separate recalls.

The supermarket has recalled Asda Buttery Spread tubs, which weigh 500g each, cost 90p each and have a best before date of December 28 2015.

“A small number of packs of Asda Buttery Spread have potentially been contaminated with clear hard plastic,” the retailer’s recall notice said.

“As a precaution we are recalling the relevant products as they are not recommended for consumption.”

Raisin and almond mix

Ikea has also recalled its Russin & Mandel raisin and almond mix because the bags may also contain other types of nuts, which would endanger people with allergies.

The retailer said some packs contained Brazil nuts, cashew nuts, walnuts and hazelnuts, which were not declared on the labels.

“Persons allergic to nuts may experience an allergic reaction if eating the product. The product is safe for anyone not allergic or sensitive to nuts,” Ikea said.

Wheat and prawns

The Co-operative has withdrawn packs of its Loved by Us Chicken and Chorizo Paella because the packaging did not mention the possible presence of wheat and prawns.

The Co-op said: “Some packs of product may contain the Co-op Chilli King Prawn Linguine which has wheat and prawns which are not declared on the label.

“This means the product may be a health risk to anyone with an allergy or intolerance to wheat or crustaceans (prawns).”

At the same time Windmill Organics has recalled its Biona Organic Cashew Nut Butter because some jars contain peanut as the main ingredient but do not declare it on the labels.

Kimm & Miller has withdrawn bottles of Hairy Bikers Tasty Trio Condiment Selection because allergens were not mentioned correctly on the labels.

Pharmacy chain Boots sold the affected bottles, with pose a risk to anyone allergic to barley, eggs, milk, mustard and sulphites.

Meanwhile, food giant Nestlé has relaunched Maggi noodles in India after a major recall of the product earlier this year.

The recall – sparked food safety fears identified by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India – was estimated to have cost more than £127M.
