Chicory root fibre shown to lower diabetes risk

Two research studies, conducted by Professor Gary Frost and his team from Imperial College London, and funded by Diabetes UK, have shown three major beneficial effects of Beneo’s chicory root fibre Orafti Synergy1 (oligofructose-enriched inulin) in reducing the risk of diabetes.

It has been shown to help prediabetic people to lower energy intake and enhance weight loss; assist prediabetic adults reduce fat content in their liver and muscle tissue; and improve their insulin secretion after a meal.

Risk of diabetes

The researchers concluded that (fermentable) chicory root fibres have metabolic effects that are of particular benefit to people at risk of diabetes.

With approximately 415M diabetic people worldwide and growing, Beneo said prevention strategies targeted at prediabetic people are urgently needed.

Gary Frost told delegates at Food Manufacture’s New Frontiers in Food and Drink conference in April that there was a big opportunity to tackle obesity with food containing non-digestible inulin fibre.
