Police probe cause of London bakery fire
The London Fire Brigade sent 10 fire engines and 72 firefighters to battle a big fire on an industrial estate in Tottenham, north London on Saturday evening (April 2).
The blaze, which ripped through a single storey industrial bakery unit, caused the building to partially collapse.
Fire brigade station manager Ian Frame said at the scene: “Crews were confronted with a large fire when they arrived and worked hard to confine it to the bakery and stop it from spreading to any neighbouring factory units.
“There was some fuel stored on site but crews isolated the supply and it was not involved in the fire.”
2,000 litre diesel tank
The fire flared on the same site as a 2,000 litre diesel tank, which fire crews managed to protect from the flames.
While the fire caused no injuries, local residents were advised to keep their doors and windows closed throughout the night as a precaution against smoke.
Large clouds of smoke featured in social media images of the bakery site, which occurred during the four hours it took to control the fire.
Frame said on Saturday: “We will now be working with our partners in Haringey Council, the Metropolitan Police and London Ambulance Service to restore normal business in the area as soon as possible.”
‘Restore normal buiness’
Firefighters were called at 18.19 and had the flames under control by 01.01 on Sunday morning. Attending the incident were crews from Tottenham, Edmonton, Walthamstow, Stoke Newington, Enfield, Holloway, who used two aerial ladder platforms.
Meanwhile, the latest fire follows two other blazes at food manufacturing facilities over the past month.
Police detectives are continuing to investigate a suspected arson attack at a bakery in Ballards Lane, Finchley, London. The blaze began at the Persian bakery Tavazo at about 04.00 on Monday, March 14 – the day before the new business was due to open.
A police spokesman told Foodmanufacture.co.uk that arson was the suspected cause of the blaze. “The fire is believed to have been started deliberately,” he told this website.
About £50,000 of food and equipment were lost in the blaze.
On March 18, a fire in a food factory in London’s Park Royal, which is under investigation, forced the evacuation of 30 workers.
The name of the company involved in the factory fire, which took place on Gorst Road in Park Royal, was not revealed.
