The ‘Taste of India’ range – featuring seven new curries, four new starters and five vegetarian side dishes – was launched in Tesco’s UK stores today (May 21).
The range will be made by Bakkavör’s meals business unit from sites based in London and Lincolnshire.
Products include: red pepper pakoras with a mango chutney dip, chicken sizzler, beef madras, aubergine masala and pilau rice and roti bread.
Sarah Green, category manager at Bakkavör, said: “Taste of India products not only look and taste great; they also give the consumer a great feast of options at a price they can afford.”
First big change
David Harman, category buying manager at Tesco, said: “The range combines new flavours with authentic recipes and marks the first big change in the Indian meals category for some time. Bakkavor has worked closely with Tesco throughout the development of the range and we are very pleased with the outcome.”
Bakkavör revealed its plan to launch an Indian range last week (May 16) with the publication of its results for the quarter ended March 31.
A strong UK performance helped earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation to rise 9% to £23M. Like-for-like sales rose by 3.1%.
