Mycotoxin test kit range expanded to include screen for ochratoxin A

Screening of commodities increases as the legislator's list of toxins gets longer

A simple screening test for the food toxin ochratoxin A has been launched by R-Biopharm.

The mycotoxin known as ochratoxin A can cause serious health problems if eaten. It is produced by mould or fungi growing on raw materials, such as cereals, coffee or dried fruit, that have been poorly stored either at source or during transport.

The new test, called the Ochracard, can be used at various screening levels and is suitable for screening commodities at European Union legislative levels.

First the ochratoxin A is concentrated and then extracted from a sample. An aliquot of the extract is then analysed using the card system.

The presence of colour on the test port after sampling indicates ochratoxin A contamination above a chosen detection level.

The fact that the cards can be read visually reduces the need for expensive equipment.

The new product complements the company's aflatoxin tests.
