The world's first fully-shrinkable film system to run on a thermoformer is being claimed of FormShrink, a new development from Multivac in conjunction with Krehalon.

The use of Krehalon's specially-developed film material, combined with Multivac's know-how in thermoforming has created a pack that can be as tight-fitting as a second skin on a wide range of products, including primary cuts, joints of meat, whole chickens (where it should be used with gassing, as a high vacuum would cause the body cavity to collapse), hams, cheese and pizza.

The integrated shape-cutting facility and excellent shrink properties eliminate all excess film at the moment of packing.

FormShrink packs can be individually tailored to the product so, for example, a beef joint could have one web that can give the appearance of a black tray with another that could suggest a netting coverage. The top web can be pre-printed and either web can be clear or coloured, depending on the effect desired. The resultant pack is claimed to be particularly hygienic, as the seal is very strong and the pack is between three and five times more resistant to puncture than standard thermoforming film.

There are also substantial material savings with FormShrink, with up to 20% less material than shrink bags and up to 50% less material compared with PVC tray packs.
