To satisfy demand for new shapes and improved colour definition in snacks and cereals, new extrusion technology has been introduced.
APV Baker's new equipment allows the production of a range of products with a distinctive surface texture consisting of a number of individual strands with a sweet or savoury centre.
It comprises a two-screw extruder, co-extrusion die, six-pump feed system, and a cutter-crimper. "A variety of filled, co-extruded pillow snacks and cereals can be made in a range of new shapes such as hexagons, 'cats' eyes', chevrons, and waves," says APV's Keith Graham.
The length capability of the cutter-crimper machine is from 12mm to 120mm, which means that filled bars can be made for individually wrapped count lines. Typical fillings are sweet or savoury cream, fruit pulp, paste, and chocolate praline.
The pump system provides precise metering of the fillings for co-extruded products.
