Duchy Originals is to make its first foray into manufacturing by setting up an organic Cornish pasty and sweet and savoury pastries bakery in Launceston, Cornwall.

The brand, which is owned and run by the Prince of Wales' estate, has subcontracted production of all its food and drink products up to now.

The Duchy Original Foods Bakery, which plans to open in April, will sell mainly to Waitrose and Sainsbury but the company declined to detail production capacity. The initial workforce of 10 is expected to double within two years.

Duchy said it aimed to source ingredients locally and from the rest of the Duchy organisation, which was set up by Prince Charles in 1990 to fund his charitable foundation.
