Martin Paterson is leaving the Food and Drink Federation to set up his own consultancy.
Paterson, who is deputy director general and director of communications at the trade body, will step down from his post in April.
He said: "Having been able to help project the voice of the industry through so many challenges over the last eight years has been an enormous privilege.
"I have particularly enjoyed the rough and tumble as principal spokesman for the industry during so many high profile issues and incidents, ranging from GM foods to the current furore surrounding the industry’s role in food and health.
"FDF has supplied an articulate and measured voice in these debates which has served the industry well and will continue to do so.”
Paterson, who joined the FDF in 1997, previously held senior communication posts at the department for Education and Employment, the Ministry of Defence, 10 Downing Street, and the Department for Trade and Industry.
