Grampian Country Food Group is slashing 80 jobs at its poultry processing plant in Banff and up to 50 jobs at its frozen chicken plant in Bucksburn, Aberdeen.
The move comes just days after the company cut 200 jobs at its factory in Llangefni, Wales, blaming poor trading conditions.
“In order to sustain our business, the decision has been taken to remove the primary processing function and whole bird packing at the Banff site," said a spokesman. "This means that this site will become a portion-only site."
“The group will be consulting with the affected people at Banff and their nominated representatives to explore ways of avoiding redundancies, including securing alternative employment either within the business or with companies in the locality.”
The company blamed poor trading conditions and strong competition for the job cuts. A spokesman said: "The numbers affected at Bucksburn are in the region of 50, but as with Banff, we are in the consultation process and the outcome has not yet been finalised. We are looking to minimise the effects on those involved during this process."
“This is a major blow for workers at Banff, considering that the area has limited resources,” said Jim McLelland, regional officer at the Bakers, Food & Allied Workers Union. “We are hoping to wind up the consultation by the end of June and hopefully we will try to save some jobs,” he added.
The Transport and General Workers' Union said it was disappointed by the losses at Bucksburn. A spokesman said: “There is stiff competition within the industry and concern over avian flu has been cited as a reason.”
