Pack-Vac leak detection kit maker Witt Gas Techniques has adapted its low-cost 'bubble' system to handle vacuum packaged food products for the first time.

Pack-Vac uses only water and compressed air as an alternative to the usual bell jar or conventional water tank method of testing non-vacuum packs and modified atmosphere packaging for leaks. But now a new adaptor has extended its use to increasingly popular vacuum packs.

The portable testing unit is available with six different size testing chambers, ranging from 203mm x 280mm x 203mm to 508mm x 813mm x 660mm.

The packages are submersed and submitted to compressed air applied at 5 to 8 bar. As the package inflates any leaks are easily detected by a stream of escaping bubbles. Test time is around 30 seconds.

Witt Gas Techniques says the equipment is easy to operate and maintain.

"And because it is much simpler and easier to use than other systems for detecting leaks in vacuum packs, operators require very little training," said general manager Carl Long.
