In a bid to discover what Brits are looking for in a pasty, Proper Cornish Food Company set up a competition where consumers could suggest new flavours.
Mediterranean fillings accounted for 11% of the 1,200 entries, and three out of the top 10 flavours hailed from the region: Feta Cheese with Roasted Vegetables ranked number five; Spaghetti Bolognaise at nine; and Pizza at 10.
Mexican and Asian themes also scored highly, with Chilli in fourth place and Oriental Duck in seventh. Vegetarian fillings were another favourite, accounting for 24% of the entries, while 15% were fish-based.
Consumers were also open to British themed dishes in both the sweet and savoury arenas.
Md Phil Ugalde says: "While the traditional Cornish pasty will always be the nation's favourite, demand for a variety of flavour options is on the increase as the popularity of the Cornish pasty continues to grow and appeal to a wider consumer audience."
The winning pasty will be announced this month and will appear as a limited edition offer at Pasty Presto stores. "We hope to develop a number of lines inspired by some of the suggestions entered into the competition over the coming months," he says.
