A new test to help employers make a rapid assessment of the English skills of migrant workers has been launched.
Developed by Yorkshire recruitment agency Horizon European and Hull College, and piloted by firms such as Pennine Foods, Moy Park and Orchard House Foods, the test helps employers find people appropriate jobs and signpost training if it is needed", said Horizon European md Sue Patterson.
The online test covered literacy, numeracy, visual signs such as health and safety symbols, and listening, said Patterson. "To work in most factories you would need level two ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) qualifications.
"However, in the case of a packer for example, if a supervisor speaks that person's language, or they are supported by other team members, then level one may be adequate." To find out more write to: sue.patterson@horizoneuropean.co.uk
