Walter Scott, production director of Wilkin & Sons, has been appointed joint md of the company with effect from the January 1 2008 in place of Peter Wilkin who is retiring from the position. Wilkin will remain chairman of the company.
Scott joined the company 22 years ago as factory manager and in 1992 became production director with overall control for the range of 100 products made at the Tiptree jam factory. His fellow joint md is Ian Thurgood.
“The biggest change in the last 20 years is our customers and their requirements," said Scott. "When I first joined, if a label was missing they would ask us to send them a label and they would stick it on. Today if a label is missing customers do not have the same reaction.”
He added: “In the last 20 years there has been a remarkable increase in volume and we have expanded the ranges of jams, marmalades, sauces and Christmas puddings to meet UK and overseas demands.”
Scott studied food science at Nottingham University and was employed as a graduate trainee by Cadbury Schweppes.
