Slovenian nutraceutical firm Vitiva has launched AquaROX 10, a new rosemary-based natural preservative designed to extend the shelf-life of fresh and frozen prawns.

Like all seafood, prawns are sensitive to oxidation and do not keep well in the fridge, said Vitiva chief executive Ohad Cohen. "We have tested AquaROX 10 on prawns sold in vacuum packs and in brine solutions.

"The results show that utilising the new rosemary formulation in concentration of 0.2% on prawns in storage helps in maintaining their original great taste and colour for up to five days, while sustaining excellent microbiological stability."

AquaROX 10 is the latest in a series of application-specific formulations based on natural plant extracts designed to protect foods from oxidative damage.

Vitiva has also recently developed a new method of encapsulating eye-health boosting lutein extracts at higher levels, allowing for smaller, more manageable, tablets and capsules.

AquaROX 10 is allergen free and GM free.
