Bakery giant Warburtons is launching a 600g loaf format, following monumental changes in UK legislation.
According to The Bread Acts of 1822 and 1836, bread weighing more than 300g must only be sold in multiples of 400g. But a new European directive has relaxed these laws.
In response, Warburtons has announced the launch of its first 600g loaf format. And it claims to be the first branded bakery manufacturer to take the opportunity of offering bread products with a weight outside of the standard 400g and 800g formats.
The new mid-sized loaves were available from mid-October. The 600g range comprises Wholegrain Goodness, All in One Medium and All in One Thick.
"This is a significant development for the UK bread market and, as the UK's largest branded baker, it is absolutely right that Warburtons is the first branded manufacturer to offer consumers a new option in their bakery purchasing habits," said Sarah Miskell, Warburtons' category director.
"Consumers who find that current bread products are either too big or too small for their needs will now benefit from greater choice," she added.
