Waterjet trimming prolongs shelf-life
One of Europe's major celery producers is benefiting from an innovative application of waterjet cutting technology devised by Power Jet Systems. The celery trimming unit has been installed at G's Marketing in Barway, near Ely, Cambridgeshire.
Waterjet has now replaced G's traditional method of trimming celery - with the use of circular saw blades. Not only is the new waterjet unit helping to increase the product's shelf-life, but out of the UK's season it is shipped to the company's production facility in Murcia, Spain for the celery growing season. This makes the payback even more attractive.
G's Marketing produces celery, lettuce, spinach, beetroot, potatoes and wild rocket. For its customers, product shelf-life is a key consideration.
It asked Power Jet Systems to come up with an improved method of trimming celery sticks to length. The established method of using two circular saws on a conveyor could have an adverse effect on the product's shelf-life.
Power Jet Systems devised a solution based on the use of pure water, fixed in-line cutting heads on a conveyor system within the firm's sterile production area where hygiene is of paramount importance. The precision and quality of cut ensures that there is no bruising to the product and no risk of contamination that might compromise quality.
