End of the line for Bakkavör business

Bakkavör closed its Exotic Farm Produce factory in Kirton the Friday before last, with up to 66 of its 115 staff now facing redundancy.

The closure of the site in Lincolnshire on Friday May 13 follows a 90 day consultation.

Icelandic giant Bakkavör said the factory – which processes peas, beans and exotic vegetables – had been unprofitable due to reduced sales and ongoing input inflation.

It will keep a small accountancy team in place at the site. It added that it had already found roles for several employees at its other sites, which include Spalding, Sutton Bridge and Bourne, and was continuing to process internal job applications in a bid to reduce the final redundancy total.

Unsustainable position

A spokesman told FoodManufacture.co.uk: “Despite enormous efforts to try to secure new business, the significant impact of reduced sales volumes and ongoing input inflation, forced Exotic Farm Produce into an unsustainable position.

“During the consultation we have been committed to securing alternative roles for the employees at other sites within the Bakkavör Group, and of the 115 employees at risk of redundancy we currently expect a maximum of 66 job losses.

Bakkavor bought the 4,688m2 site in August 2007. It had a turnover of around £20m.
