Both firms have confirmed that the jobs face the chop as a result of a restructuring of operations at the sites.
Nestlé told FoodManufacture.co.uk that it was currently working with Unite the union to discuss alternatives to 20 job cuts at its site Girvan, Scotland. Earlier this month Sandra Osborne Labour MP for Ayr, Carrick and Cumnock also visited the site in a bid to retaining the jobs.
A Nestlé spokesman said: “We need to ensure our Girvan site is competitive today and in the future. Nestlé is now proposing the next phase of investment which will secure the long-term viability of the Girvan site and more than 80 local dairy farmers who supply milk to it. However, it will have an impact on our workforce.”
Opportunities
The firm stressed that “opportunities” would be available for workers at other sites across the UK and it said it hoped “as many people as possible stay within the business”.
Dairy Crest also confirmed that 30 jobs at its Frome site in Somerset were likely to be cut following a processing review at the factory.
“We have been restructuring our operating procedures and shift patterns at our cheese packing facility in Manor Road,” a statement from the firm revealed.
“Unfortunately this restructure has resulted in some job losses and we are providing as much support as possible to minimise the impact on anyone who is affected by this review.”
