Cold crown for energy enhancement

GEA Refrigeration Netherlands – a member company of GEA Refrigeration Technologies – won the Dutch Refrigeration Prize in February 2012 for its combination of a refrigerating plant and a heat pump called the Energy Enhancer.

The Energy Enhancer uses an ammonia heat pump to raise the temperature of the heat exhausted from refrigeration compressors (originally emitted at approximately 35°C) to a level of around 80°C.

The raised heat enables efficient use of the heat in, for example, milk treatment (for pasteurisation), French fries production (for blanching), and meat processing (for machine cleaning).

The Energy Enhancer raises exhausted heat which is often dissipated into the environment to a higher temperature, where it becomes useful energy. This eliminates the need to produce heat by gas-fired hot-water heaters or steam generators.

GEA claims this results in tremendous energy savings: A gas boiler requires approximately 120kW in the form of gas input to produce 100kW of useful heat, whereas the Energy Enhancer requires only 20 kW of electrical power to deliver the same thermal output. This enables not only significant reduction in operating costs, but also leads to a "drastic reduction in carbon dioxide emissions".
