Newcastle Brown Ale in top 10 US beer list

Cult beer Newcastle Brown Ale has fought off stiff global competition to win a place in the list of the US’s top 10 favourite beers.

The beer, beloved on this side of the Atlantic as Newky Brown, won fourth place in the list compiled by research group Harris International.

The brand, now owned by Heineken International, was launched in 1927 by Newcastle Breweries. Production moved to Tadcaster, North Yorkshire in 2010.

Accorded cult status by thirsty students of the 1990s, US sales have steadily mounted over recent years.

Guinness Stout

Guinness Stout appeared in fifth place, ahead of east coast favourite Samuel Adams Boston Lager.

Top place in the list of American’s favourite beers was claimed by Yuenling Traditional lager.

Second and third places were held by Blue Moon Beer and Sierra Nevada Pale Ale respectively.

Heineken Beer

Heineken Beer, whose parent firm owns Newcastle Brown Ale, won ninth place in the list.

In 10th place was Mexican beer Corona Extra.

The Harris Poll EquiTrend survey is an annual study of more than 38,000 US consumers. Participants are invited to share their views of more than 1,500 fast moving consumer goods. The survey was conducted between January 31 and February 20, 2012.

Meanwhile, Newcastle United football legend turned TV commentator, Alan Shearer has pledged to help celebrate the Queen's Jubilee with Newcastle Brown Ale.

Shearer said he planned to bring Newky Brown to his local Big Jubilee Lunch – a series of lunches to be staged nationwide on Sunday June 3 during the Diamond Jubilee bank holiday weekend.

The football star is one of 60 celebrities backing the Big Jubilee Lunch campaign.
