Greggs crowned sandwich chain of year

High street baker Greggs has fought off stiff competition from Pret A Manger, Subway and O'Briens to win the title ‘Specialist Sandwich Chain of the Year’.

The award from the British Sandwich Association recognises those who set the highest standard in retailing sandwiches, through product range, innovation and marketing and in-shop presentation.

Sandwich sales represent about a third of its business with savoury turnover accounting for another third. It’s best-selling sandwiches are fresh bacon breakfast rolls.

Enthusiastic teams

Greggs chief executive Ken McMeikan said: “The award will mean so much to our bakers who take enormous pride in baking the bread for our sandwiches; our shop teams who lovingly prepare the sandwiches by hand every single day; and the enthusiastic teams who develop our range and make sure we are providing customers with a fabulous choice.

“It’s all the more special to receive this award in the 250th Anniversary Year of the Sandwich.”

Meanwhile, spring rain dampened Greggs’ latest financial results with like-for-like sales down 1.8% in the 19 weeks to May 12 2012.
