Hundreds of angry farmers blocked Arla Food’s factory in Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire last night (August 15) for about five hours.

The protest – organised by the campaign group Farmers For Action – prevented lorries entering and leaving the factory.

Producer prices

Farmers wanted to draw attention to the low prices paid to milk producers, which they claimed were below their production costs. One farmer said that he and his colleagues wanted to recover the money lost when the Arla reduced its producer prices earlier this year.

“There will be more action, this week and next week. We will step it up a bit then. This is just a gentle reminder,” one protester told BBC News.

Another protester warned that the big four retailers and three largest processors could be targeted.
