Ingredients firm Puratos has officially laid the first stone of its new global research and development (R&D) centre at its headquarters in Groot-Bijgaarden, Belgium.

Set to open in the Summer of 2014, the centre of innovation will include three research platforms a food technology laboratory, a baked products laboratory, and a biotechnology and analytical laboratory. The global research hub will be open to Puratos's global R&D team and the firm's research partners, including some universities.

Continuous innovation

Chairman of the board of Puratos Group Eddy Van Belle said: "For more than 90 years already, continuous innovation has been the reason for our success. It is a constant process of risk taking and perseverance that has been the basis for many success stories, such as the T500  ̶  the very first complete bread improver, which we invented 60 years ago. Many other important innovations have followed since and keep Puratos and its products at the top of providing innovative solutions to our customers."

As part of Puratos's long-term investment plan, a regional R&D centre for Asia will open in Guangzhou in China, with another major R&D centre set to open in the US next year.

Harsh economic climate

Puratos group chief executive Daniel Malcorps said: "It is our firm belief that continued investment in the future is the best way to overcome today's harsh economic climate. By doing so, we can continue to innovate and to improve the products and services we offer, as well as inspire our customers."

Malcorps added: "Ultimately, we want to help our clients to become even more successful in their businesses. With this new centre, we confirm this commitment to our customers around the world."
