Oats health claim with approval

Oats firm awarded EFSA Article 14 health claim
DSM is introducing OatWell oat beta-glucan, following its acquisition of the OatWell brand from CreaNutrition.

Oat beta-glucan was awarded positive opinions from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and the European Commission has authorised Article 14 health claims for cholesterol reduction and the associated reduced risk of developing heart disease, as well as for digestive health and blood glucose control.

Beta-glucan is a soluble fibre in oats. It's known for its heart health benefits and helps maintain healthy blood sugar and cholesterol – both pillars of cardiovascular function. Clinical studies show three grams of beta-glucan daily lowers cardiovascular disease risk by as much as 20%.

Ruedi Duss, global business manager for OatWell at DSM, says: "Backed by strong science, we look forward to helping manufacturers offer consumers an effective nutritional approach to cardiovascular health."

"As well as its positive effects on cholesterol, OatWell helps manage blood sugar levels by reducing glycaemic response and promotes digestive health by improving bowel function. These claims are also recognised by EFSA, making OatWell a well-rounded health ingredient that is perfect for enhancing a wide range of food products."
