Sea salt targets new low-sodium for kids

Salt of the Earth’s low-sodium sea salt is designed to help food manufacturers meet low-sodium targets for children, according to the firm.

The multicoloured WonderSalt is enriched with extracts of vegetables and fruits (such as radish, carrot, apple and lemon), providing health benefits as well as natural colouring. It contains only 50% the sodium of common salt, yet it is designed to be identical in taste.

“Salt is invisible when added to foods,” says Inbal Trop Kirsch, marketing director of Salt of the Earth. “By colouring WonderSalt with fruit and vegetable essences, it is possible not only to help kids and adults eat low-sodium foods, as a bonus, they can see how much salt to put on their food. This way, they can control their salt intake easily and learn in a fun way.”

Vegetarian low-sodium salt

WonderSalt contains a proprietary mix of sodium and potassium that is combined with the natural essences of fruits and vegetables to create a vegetarian low-sodium salt.

The product is marketed in four colours: yellow, red, orange and green. These ‘natural colours’ are normally susceptible to oxidation, so the manufacturer has developed a technology to overcome oxidation and maintain a long shelf-life.
