A new generation of young talent is being attracted into the food and drink manufacturing sector by a summer school run by Nottingham University.

In this video interview, top student Martha Collison explains how attending the summer school helped her choose the right A-Levels to prepare for a career in food manufacturing.

In addition to getting an introduction into university life, the teenager learnt about the wide range of roles on offer in the food industry and how best to prepare for them.

New generation of students

Filmed at Collison’s Charters School, Ascot, the video also features the views of her teacher, Gaynor Bradley, head of science, technology, engineering and maths at the school. Bradley explained how the summer school is reaching out to a new generation of students who may not previously have considered a food industry career.

Up to 137,000 new recruits will be needed to fill the gap left by workers nearing retirement over the next few years.

Meanwhile, after attending the course at Nottingham University, Collison wrote an award-winning appraisal of the course.

An in-depth profile of the summer school and Collison’s report on it is available here.
