The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has extended the appointment of Tim Bennett as its chair until December 2014 or until a permanent appointment is made.

Bennett was appointed on an interim basis following the departure of Jeff Rooker from the FSA at the end of his four-year contract in July 2013.

Bennett is currently the chairman of DairyCo. Previously he held the roles of deputy president and then president of the National Farmers Union of England and Wales between 1998 and 2006.

‘Benefit’

FSA ceo Catherine Brown said: “We are delighted to have the benefit of Tim’s leadership for the next year. This appointment ensures that we will continue to have the benefit of strong board leadership in protecting food safety and consumer interests in relation to food.”

The recruitment of a permanent successor to Bennett will be led by the Department of Health in liaison with relevant colleagues in the devolved administrations, the FSA added.

Meanwhile, the FSA has also extended Henrietta Campbell’s role as deputy chair for the same period.
