Dairy UK has made a number of changes to its leadership structure ahead of a “new raft of sustainability challenges” it fears will impact on the supply chain in 2014.

Jo Stewart joins Dairy UK as environment manager, having previously worked with the Climate Action Programme and Carbon Clear.

Current Dairy UK policy director Peter Dawson will now also oversee sustainability at the organisation.

Dawson said: “Sustainability remains at the heart of decision-makers’ agendas across Europe and it is essential that the UK industry’s interests are represented vigorously.”

‘Significant impact on costs’

The European-led review of Best Available Techniques Reference Documents, which will address the treatment and processing of milk, animal and vegetable materials within food production, could have a significant impact on costs, warned Dairy UK chief executive Judith Bryans.

“Other reviews are taking place in Europe such as the Commission’s climate change and energy package and reform of the EU emissions trading systems,” Bryans added. “In the UK the industry will also be addressing how to refine and progress the Dairy Roadmap.

“All of these issues suggest it will be a milestone year for sustainability in the dairy sector. As such, Dairy UK will be dedicating additional resources to work in this area.”
