The range, which is called 'The Power of Less’, can reduce the blood glucose response of food and drinks and help improve consumers’ diets, Beneo claims.
“High glycaemic diets have been linked to the increased incidence of non-communicable diseases, such as diabetes and obesity,” it adds.
‘Increasingly aware’
Blood glucose management is gaining pace and “consumers are increasingly aware that low glycaemic products contribute to healthy nutrition,” it says.
Worldwide launches of products with a low-glycaemic claim in 2013 were 20% higher than in 2012, with UK launches increasing by 43% on 2012’s levels – making it the global leader according to statistics from Mintel.
Beneo’s sugar-lowering ingredient Palatinose has received a health claim approval from the European Food Safety Authority, it says.
Product
Palatinose has been incorporated into a product called Power Chews to lower their sucrose levels and to achieve a slower rise in consumer blood glucose. The product has also been incorporated into a fat-free fruit yogurt drink called Velvety Yo-fruit Sips.
Dominic Speleers, executive member of the Beneo board, says: “It is fascinating for Beneo to offer low-glycaemic products that can help to delay the onset of diseases like type two diabetes or heart disease.”
