Jeremy Clarkson ‘too busy counting money’ for Aldi
That’s the conclusion of a FoodManufacture.co.uk survey, after the German discount store offered Clarkson a job on the shop floor of its soon-to-open new store in Oxfordshire.
Aldi made the tongue-in-cheek employment offer after the former Top Gear star was sacked from the smash hit TV show. Clarkson was fired after physically and verbally abusing a BBC producer who was unable to supply steak and chips after a long day filming an episode of the award-winning programme.
Checking out Ferraris
Asked whether Clarkson was likely to swap checking out Ferraris for checking out fish fingers, 58% of respondents agreed with the view: “No chance, he will be too busy counting his money.”
A further 27% of participants thought he might accept the job offer but, following Clarkson’s row over food, cautioned against ordering meat late in the evening. “He might but, if he does, don’t order a steak after 9pm,” agreed respondents.
But 15% of those taking part in our survey agreed with the view: “Why not with the extra time on his hands?”
‘Don’t worry Jeremy Clarkson’
After Clarkson was fired on Wednesday March 25, Aldi posted on the social networking site Twitter: “Don’t worry ... Jeremy Clarkson, our Chipping Norton store’s opening soon, so contact Aldi Careers UK if you’re interested ...” See the full tweet below.
Readers' verdict on Aldi job
“No chance, he will be too busy counting his money.”
The offer was made after BBC director general Tony Hall sacked the star following the late-night steak row that turned violent. Hall said in a statement: “A member of staff – [Top Gear producer Oisin Tymon] who was a completely innocent party – took himself to Accident and Emergency after a physical altercation accompanied by sustained and prolonged verbal abuse of an extreme nature.
“For me, a line has been crossed. There cannot be one rule for one and one rule for another dictated by either rank, or public relations and commercial considerations.”
The BBC boss went on to praise Clarkson's “huge talent” in a 448-word statement last week. “This decision should in no way detract from the extraordinary contribution that Jeremy Clarkson has made to the BBC. I have always personally been a great fan of his work and Top Gear. Jeremy is a huge talent. He may be leaving the BBC but I am sure he will continue to entertain, challenge and amuse audiences for many years to come.”
