Big four supermarkets recall gluten-free products

Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury, Morrisons and Waitrose have recalled the gluten-free products as they are a possible health risk for those with an allergy or intolerance to gluten.

Gluten-free food manufacturer Genius Foods has also had to recall its ‘Genius Crumpets’ and Livwell crumpets and garlic naan over fears they may contain gluten.

Genius Foods said it had notified their customers of the issue and had recalled the products listed above.

Allergy support organisations​

It has also contacted the relevant allergy support organisations, which will inform their members about the recall.

The FSA encouraged anyone suffering from coeliac disease or a gluten intolerance not to eat the affected products.

“If you have bought one of these products and have an allergy or intolerance to gluten, do not eat it,”​ it said.

“Instead, return it to the store from where it was bought.”​

Sainsbury was the top offender among the retailers, with six of its products been pulled off the shelves.

It was forced to recall its ‘free from pizza bases’; free from white pitta breads; free from mulitiseeded pitta breads; free from 2 garlic & coriander Naan; free from 6 syrup pancakes and free from 4 sultana scones.

Point-of-sale notices ​

Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Waitrose have all displayed point-of-sale recall notices in stores.

These notices tell customers why the products have been recalled and advise them of what actions to take if they have bought a product.

The relevant allergy support organisations have also been contacted.
