Genius is acquiring the operations of Chapel Foods and its gluten-free manufacturing facility in Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire. It will also take on 30 employees.
Since launching a range of frozen pies with Chapel Foods in 2014, Genius has seen strong growth in the frozen sector and aims to bolster its position.
‘Accelerate growth strategy’
Genius ceo Roz Cuschieri said: “The acquisition of Chapel Foods will allow us to accelerate our growth strategy in the frozen free-from sector, as we continue to respond to consumer demand for gluten-free convenience foods in line with those available in the mainstream aisle.
“We’re confident that the combination of Chapel Foods’s manufacturing expertise and established distribution network, coupled with Genius’ product innovation and investment in the site, will pave the way for future success.”
The acquisition will increase the distribution of gluten-free frozen pies, sausage rolls and quiches made at the Chapel Foods site in Scunthorpe.
Boost production capacity
It will also boost production capacity, allowing Genius to add new products to its frozen portfolio in the future.
Back in 2013 Genius acquired two bakeries from Finsbury Food Group in a £21M deal.
The firm grew its product category by 25% and created 400 jobs after investment in the production sites in Hull and Bathgate.
