Asda recall after curry and cheese sauce mix-up

The retailer yesterday (December 16) withdrew products which were labelled as Chip Shop Curry Sauce Mix but actually contained cheese sauce mix made of milk.

Earlier this month Asda recalled Cheese Sauce Mix​ products for the opposite problem – those pots were actually filled with curry sauce mix containing mustard and wheat.

‘Contains cheese sauce mix’​

Both products were produced in the same factory owned by supplier Golden Fry. The factory is understood to be investing in label verification technology to prevent the mistake happening again. 

An Asda spokesperson said: “Customer safety is always our number one priority and following reports of a small number of incidences of Asda Cheese Sauce Mix and Asda Chip Shop Curry Sauce Mix being labelled incorrectly, the decision was taken to withdrawn the affected batches and issue an allergy alert.​

“We’re sorry for any inconvenience this has caused and would like to reassure our customers that we’re conducting a full investigation with our supplier to understand how the mix-up occurred.”​

The latest recall notice said the incorrect label on the curry sauce pot did not mention the presence of milk, which is an allergen. 

“It has been brought to our attention that a small number of our Asda Chip Shop Curry Sauce Mix​ – batch 5291, best before October 2016 – contains cheese sauce mix,”​ it said.

Food firm Dodotraders UK also recalled Steward’s Lazzat Spices for Chicken yesterday due to the undeclared presence of mustard.

The batch, with a best before date of December 31 2015, posed a risk to anyone who was allergic to mustard.

Meanwhile, Manning Impex has withdrawn cans of V Fresh Coconut Milk Drink because it contains dairy milk, which is not mentioned on the ingredients list.

The same problem was identified in cans of Orthodox Coconut Palm brand Coconut Juice, which has also been recalled this week.

In another allergen recall, Grannies Choice Chocolate Teacakes have been withdrawn because milk, soya and wheat were not included on the labels.
