The delivery company intended to more than double staff numbers at the Swansea site over the Christmas period. The site currently employs 1,200 permanent members of staff.
Seasonal staff would be paid £7.35 an hour at the distribution centre, and recruitment has started through local recruitment agencies.
The company expects this Christmas to be its biggest festive season ever.
‘Thousands of seasonal associates’
Amazon vice president of UK operations John Tagawa said: “The thousands of seasonal associates who join us at this time each year play an integral role in helping us deliver an exceptional experience for our customers during the Christmas season.
“We look forward to welcoming back the people who join us each and every Christmas as well as many new faces who will be joining the Amazon team for the first time.”
Around 2,500 members of staff who started as seasonal workers became full-time last year. Tagawa hasn’t ruled out hiring full-time members of staff from this year’s haul.
‘Opportunities to transfer to permanent roles’
“As we continue to grow our network, there will be opportunities for people who join us in seasonal roles to transfer to permanent positions.
“I am delighted that more than 2,000 people who worked for Amazon in seasonal positions last Christmas are now in permanent roles.”
Earlier this week, Greencore announced plans to recruit 300 members of seasonal staff at its Evercreech desserts plant in Somerset, on September 28. The company, which manufactures 3M Christmas cakes and desserts every year, said its roles would mainly be available between December 15 and December 23.
