The nutritional oils market has been boosted with the arrival of a new omega-3 rich product made from flaxseed.

Onavita is a fully refined, non-genetically modified flaxseed oil aimed at customers looking to add heart-healthy ingredients to products, said its maker, Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM).

Vegetarians and vegans

Suitable for vegetarians and vegans, the oil can be used in a variety of products such as pasta sauces and dressings.

Having recently acquired companies like Harvest Innovations, Eatem Foods and Wild Flavors & Specialty Ingredients, ADM has expanded its portfolio with naturally sourced options like Onavita, said Mike Zora, general manager of natural health and nutrition at the US grain giant.

‘Reliable ingredient provider’

“We have long been recognised as a reliable ingredient provider. By leveraging our portfolio, customers can transform their products by adding nutrition while maintaining product quality,” Zora added.

The US Food and Drug Administration considers products containing at least 160mg per serving of alpha linolenic acid, which is found in flaxseed oil, to be a good source of omega-3.
