Furniss Biscuits, the Cornish biscuit manufacturer, which is part of the Proper Cornish Group, has recently installed a new steel band oven at its Redruth bakery.

As part of its investment programme, all Furniss products are now running through the new £400,000 oven, made by Danish firm Haas-Meincke.

The oven has boosted production capacity to 300 biscuits a minute as a result of using a 1m-wide belt, which is wider than the previous model.

It has enabled an extra production run to be made each day, equating to another 18% increase in productivity.

The consistency of the biscuits’ bake has also been improved, which has reduced waste.

New technology detects if a change in bake needs to be made, which can be done within four minutes – half the time previously needed.

The oven is supervised by a programmable logic controller with touchscreen technology. Temperature changes on the oven are easily made, allowing production flexibility.

The second stage of the investment will involve installing wire cutting and rotary mould systems, which will further increase the quantity of biscuits produced.
