Olive and citrus extract in heart health boost

A novel combination of olive and citrus extracts aimed at supporting cardiovascular health and protecting against hardening of the arteries was unveiled at last month’s SupplySide West show in Las Vegas.

CitrOlive combines a “synergetic” formulation of olive and citrus extracts, and is backed by extensive research of phytochemicals, polyphenols and flavonoids, maker Frutarom Health claimed.

The benefits of CitrOlive result from its strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity, the firm added.

Water-soluble product

It is water-soluble and can be combined in functional food and drinks, dietary supplements and nutrition bars.

“CitrOlive is an important addition to our Mediterranean ingredients line,” says Yannick Capelle, product manager for Frutarom.

“It reflects our mission to explore the benefits of the Mediterranean diet and provide pure, safe ingredients backed by solid scientific research.”

Double-blind clinical trial

In a double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial performed at Murcia University in Spain, subjects received 500mg a day of CitrOlive or matching placebo for a period of 90 days.

Frutarom said the results showed a significant drop in triglycerides and oxidised low-density lipoprotein levels – both considered prominent risk factors for cardiovascular disorders – versus the placebo.

Furthermore, acute toxicity studies have demonstrated the safety of the product, it added.
