Red grape antioxidant earns EU safety status

An antioxidant found in the skin of red grapes has been declared safe to use by the European Food Safety Authority.

A high purity trans-resveratrol, resVida has been ruled safe in doses of 150mg per day as a supplement in capsule or tablet form. It can also be used in baked cereal bars, reduced fat yogurts and a wide range of beverages.

According to producer DSM, resVida is backed by a raft of scientific studies that indicate it can help maintain healthy blood pressure, blood glucose and insulin activity.

Increased fat oxidation

Furthermore, it can induce endurance training-like effects in muscle such as increased fat oxidation and fat storage capacity, the Dutch-based company added.

The novel foods application was first given the green light by the European Commission in 2013, but objections followed from Member States concerned about potential toxicity.
