‘T-free’ krill oil removes heart disease threat

An improved ‘T-free’ version of a krill oil has been unveiled by its maker.

Enzymotec’s K.Real contained no trimethylamine (TMA), a volatile molecule that gives rotting fish its unpleasant smell.

It is also free of trimethylamine-oxide (TMAO), a compound found in marine products that has been linked with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.

The dangers of TMAO

Scientific and popular awareness of the dangers of TMAO was rising and there is likely to be increased demand for T-free fish oil in the coming years, Enzymotec said.

K.Real has been shown to be five to 10 times more resistant to oxidation than competitor krill products, the company claimed.

Its TMAO-free process is patent pending.
