Quinoa production in UK boosted by deal

Quinoa production in the UK is set to increase after a domestic grower struck a deal to supply three years’ worth of crop to Lincolnshire-based pulse processor Dunns.

Under the deal, Shropshire-based British Quinoa will supply several hundred tonnes annually from UK growers – including itself – to Dunns.

It has been underwritten by a joint £50,000 investment to upgrade Dunns’s production line. All product will be marketed by British Quinoa.

Bespoke quinoa line

Dunns trader Franek Smith said the joint investment would enable the processor to have a bespoke quinoa line.

“In addition, investment in new colour-sorting technology will provide a significant improvement in the ability to efficiently process small grains, including quinoa,” he added.

British Quinoa md Stephen Jones said he was positive quinoa would appear in an “increasing number of products over the next few years”.
