Sourcing sustainable snacking ingredients and hot consumption trends will take centre stage during the Food Manufacture Group’s free, one-hour webinar at 3pm on Thursday June 15.

The online seminar will deliver insights into the latest trends in sustainable production, emerging consumption patterns and healthy reformulation of snack products.

Sharing key industry insights into sustainable production and consumption trends will be Danielle Veenstra, senior sustainability specialist with webinar sponsor Almond Board of California (ABC), and Sebastian Emig, president of the European Snacks Association (ESA).

The third speaker will be Lu Ann Williams, director of innovation at Innova Market Insights.

Sustainable growing practices

ABC’s sustainability specialist will explain how the California almond industry is implementing sustainable growing practices, based on years of research and innovation, in response to consumers’ evolving demands.

While the detailed implementation of sustainable practices differs from orchard to orchard, depending on particular conditions, common themes focus on the careful husbandry of natural resources.

Particular attention is given to reviewing weather, soil moisture and the trees’ needs to determine the most effective irrigation strategies and nutrient regimes.

Effective irrigation strategies

In addition to water efficiency, specific areas of research included: air quality, energy use, land management and environmentally-sensitive pest control, particularly with regard to bee health.

Other areas of research include growers’ carbon footprint and waste management.

Focusing on Europe, the ESA president will deliver insights into the continent’s savoury snacks market, valued at about €14bn in 2014.

Emig will also cover the progress made by manufacturers on the healthy reformulation of nearly 1.85Mt of savoury snack products purchased each year.

Innova’s director of innovation will profile the hot snacking trends for 2017 and beyond.
