British Bacon Supplies plans factory closure

Meat supplier British Bacon Supplies is planning to close its Huddersfield factory, after a flood last year at its sister factory reduced production.

The bacon firm told staff that the Huddersfield site’s operations were under review earlier this month. British Bacon Supplies owner, Damika, said heavy investment into the site couldn’t improve production.

A Damika spokeswoman told FoodManufacture.co.uk: “On Friday May 5, staff at the British Bacon Supplies factory in Huddersfield, were informed that the future operations at the site were under consideration. After the floods at our sister factory in Halifax, trading conditions have been very difficult.

‘Unable to operate’

“For almost 15 months, we have maintained jobs for staff from both sites, even though we have not yet got back to full production. Although we have invested heavily into the factory at Huddersfield to ensure that we provide our customers with the quality and service that they expect, we are unable to operate at the efficiency levels needed.

“We are continuing to work and fully consult with our staff during this period.”

Supplying bacon for retail and foodservice

British Bacon Supplies has supplied bacon for retail and foodservice customers for more than 25 years. Its products are stocked in supermarkets, butchers and delicatessens, it said. It also supplies cafés, service stations, cruise liners and holiday resorts.

British Bacon Supplies’ sister brand, Taylor’s, was flooded during December 2015’s Storm Desmond. The storm broke all previous UK rainfall records, within some parts of the UK receiving more than 340mm of rain within 24 hours.
