Convenience food producer makes senior hires

Convenience food manufacturer Symington’s made two senior appointments yesterday (May 30).

Tim Whiting joined the company as chairman, after serving in an advisory role since September last year.

Whiting has more than 15 years of experience working in the food and drink industry, including senior roles at RHM – before it was taken over by Premier Foods – and Northern Foods.

More recently he was chief executive of the Caudwell Group, Lifestyle Services Group and the now defunct mobile phone retailer Phones 4U.

Head of finance

Clare Urmston has been appointed chief financial officer, having joined Symington’s last month from Wilko Retail where she was head of finance. She replaces John Kitson, who has retired from the role.

Urmston worked for Northern Foods before joining Wilko in 2009 and has extensive experience in the manufacturing and retail industries.

Symington’s ceo John Power said:  “We have spent a great deal of effort over the last few months in restructuring the business to ensure its efficient and ongoing success.

“Strengthening our management team has very much been part of that plan and I am delighted to welcome Tim and Clare to the company, who are both accomplished professionals in their respective areas.”

‘Strengthening our management team’

Symington’s produces a range of branded convenience foods, including Mug Shot, Naked Noodle and Chicken Tonight. It also produces Aunt Bessie’s, Peppa Pig and Minions products under licence.

Founded in 1827, Symington’s is based in Leeds and employs 700 people across five sites.
