Confectionery manufacturer Aldomak has acquired The Handmade Meringue Company (HMC) for an undisclosed sum, as it secures its first export order.

The Scottish food producer already manufactured for the HMC and said it would improve its margins through the ownership of the brand.

The meringue business – which is based in Thornliebank, East Renfrewshire – has a listing in all seven Waitrose shops in Scotland.

Aldomak md Dario Riccomini said the acquisition of the HMC was “an opportunity to extend our product range which was too good to miss”.

First export order

The company has also secured its first export order from a retail chain in Abu Dhabi.

Riccomini added: “It’s a small order which will be shipped before Christmas but we are hopeful this will lead to stronger export links to this market in the future.

“We are also currently in talks with a number of prospective new customers on the supply of our existing range and by acquiring The Handmade Meringue Company brand we can now add this attractive offering. The brand also benefits from supplying Waitrose's seven Scottish branches.”

Founded in 1932 and controlled by the Riccomini family since the 1970s, Aldomak supplies major brands with fudge and macaroons.

Supplies major brands

It provides a number of supermarkets with a range of confectionery and oat-based products and supplies products for discount retailer Aldi’s Specially Selected range. Earlier this year, the company was awarded Grade A British Retail Consortium status.

If you and your business are looking to take the first step on your export journey, check out the William Reed group’s Food Xport Conference at Ardencote Manor, Warwickshire in February next year (see box below for more details).

Meanwhile, last month, British vegetarian meal manufacturer Goodlife Foods was acquired by Dutch frozen snack producer Izico Food Group for an undisclosed amount, as it plans to strengthen its position in the UK market.
