Charles Wilson named Tesco retail and wholesale boss

Booker ceo Charles Wilson has been named ceo of Tesco’s UK and Republic of Ireland (ROI) retail and wholesale operations, replacing Matt Davies.

A Tesco spokesman confirmed this meant Wilson would assume Davies’ responsibilities for distribution, convenience retail and large stores, with areas such as fascia development and in-store management ultimately coming under his remit.

In a statement, Tesco confirmed Davies would remain in post until the company’s merger with Booker had been completed, which is expected to happen in early March. After supporting the handover, Davies would then relinquish his role at the end of April.

“I am delighted Charles will be joining the Tesco board and executive committee,” said Tesco ceo Dave Lewis. “He brings substantial commercial and retail experience and has an exceptional track record of increasing performance and driving growth in customer-focused businesses.

Turnaround

Charles is ideally suited to lead the UK and ROI business for the combined group in the next phase of our turnaround. I would also like to thank Matt for his outstanding contribution to Tesco over the last three years.

His values-based leadership and invaluable support have been instrumental to the significant progress we have made in the transformation of the UK and ROI business. I wish him well for the future.”

Last month, Davies announced almost 1,700 job cuts across its larger stores in a bid to simplify the operational structure.
