Research body lays out food safety challenges

Anti-microbial resistance and the role of gut microbes in diet have been identified as two of the leading challenges faced by the food industry following a consultation by Campden BRI.

Addressing the significance of anti-microbial resistance in food and drink was a key concern of the consultation, which covered the entire food chain.

Understanding and harnessing the role of gut microbes in diet-related health conditions, was also a prime concern of Campden BRI’s 2,400 members, who span 75 countries.

The benefits and risks of the ‘connected world’

Other key concerns included managing the benefits and risks of the ‘connected world’ – specifically the Internet of Things, Big Data and artificial intelligence; sustaining product quality in the face of rising costs of operations and materials; and stronger recognition of soil as a resource and methods for its protection.

Campden BRI claimed the consultation was “the largest and most comprehensive of industry’s needs”.
